Poulsbo
Fire Department Chief Shields began service as the second paid Poulsbo Fire Chief in 1985 following Larry Dibble's departure. He has overseen the department through a period of significant growth and expansion of services. Some of those include Increased staffing from seven paid personnel in 1985 to 35 personnel today, overseeing the planning and construction of a new headquarters fire station, remodel of the Surfrest fire station and currently planning for the construction of the Pioneer Hill fire station. He also facilitated the mergers of KCFD 3 (Keyport) and KCFD 17 (Lemolo) into Fire District 18, bringing the three districts together as one in the late 1980s. In addition he coordinated the annexation of Port Gamble and the City of Poulsbo into fire district 18 in 1998 and 1999, respectively. Chief Shields is active in various chiefs associations and has held positions from a member to the present position of President, Kitsap County Fire Chiefs Association and has served as a board member on the Washington State Fire Chiefs Association during his years in the fire service. He is also active in the local Rotary and currently serves as president, his tenure as president began in July 2002. |
Prior to becoming Poulsbo's Fire Chief, Jim Shields was a volunteer firefighter and started with the department on March 17, 1969. During his volunteer career he held the rank of firefighter, lieutenant, captain, battalion chief and assistant chief before being appointed to the position of paid fire chief in 1985. Chief Shields has strong ties to the community and was born and raised in Poulsbo. His family has lived in Poulsbo for five generations, in the early years working in the cod fishing industry. He currently lives in Poulsbo with wife Ginger. They both enjoy touring on their Harley Davidson motorcycle. |
