Poulsbo Fire Department
Union Information

The 38 professional Firefighters, Paramedics, and Fire Officers of the Poulsbo Fire Department are proud members of the International Association of Firefighters Local 2819. The IAFF, which formed in 1918, represents a vast majority of the 250,000 professional Firefighters in the United States and Canada.

Local 2819 of the IAFF represents the 106 Firefighters from North Kitsap Fire & Rescue, Central Kitsap Fire & Rescue, as well as the Poulsbo Fire Department.

The International Association of Firefighters, the Washington State Council of Firefighters, and Local 2819 have made great strides in improving the health and safety of Firefighters. Working with the International Association of Fire Chiefs the IAFF has developed Health and Safety programs that have made great strides in improving the well being of Firefighters. The IAFF has supported the work of the National Fire Protection Agency in creating standards such as NFPA 1500 (Health and Safety) and NFPA 1710 (Minimum Staffing) to dramatically improve the standard of safety in this industry. The IAFF also provides its members with direct training on topics such as Hazardous Materials and Weapons of Mass destruction which improves our ability to provide the best service possible to the public. The IAFF is more than a traditional labor union, it is the advocate for the safety of Firefighters and a major force behind the delivery of effective and efficient delivery of Fire and Emergency Medical service.

The Firefighters of Local 2819 are dedicated to supporting several local and national charities. One of our largest events every year is the Muscular Dystrophy’s ‘Fill the Boot’ drive.

The IAFF is consistently the largest contributor to the MDA raising over 4 million dollars last year. Local 2819 has participated in this fund raiser for several years and last year had the largest increase in donations of any Local in the State. Another Boot drive we support each fall is the Northwest Burn Foundation’s ‘Give Burns the Boot’ which supports Burn injury research and prevention as well as a summer camp for children with severe burn injuries. Every spring Professional Firefighters from Local 2819 and across the State Don their Bunker gear and Breathing Apparatus and race up each of the 69 floors of the Bank of America Tower to raise money for the Leukemia Society. This year we teamed up with Safe Kids to create a 2003 Calendar called “Our Heroes” to deliver home safety tips and to raise money for Safe Kids of Kitsap County, These are some of the big charity events we participate in, but everyday you can find your local firefighters pitching in to support various local charities and youth activities throughout the community.

A quick note from September 11th...
On September 11, 2001 we watched with you as thousands of citizens and hundreds of our brother and sister Firefighters were murdered. We mourned with you at this tragic loss of human life and attack on our very way of life. But then, we were humbled by the outpouring of support we received from this community in the following weeks. Every gesture of support, from the flowers left in front of the stations to the simple “be careful” as we left for a call, were truly appreciated. We are honored and proud to serve the people of such a wonderful community. Thank You.
