Poulsbo Fire Department
Becoming a Volunteer Firefighter

Becoming a Volunteer with the Poulsbo Fire Department is a great way to serve your community or get a start toward a career as a Firefighter or an Emergency Medical Technician. The hours are long but the rewards can be great.

The testing, selection and initial training of volunteer firefighters is done in cooperation with other Kitsap County Fire Departments at a countywide Recruit Academy conducted twice each year.

This basic recruit firefighter training consists of approximately 100 hours of classes divided between classroom lectures on evenings during the week, and manipulative skills activities all day Saturday and Sunday at the Kitsap Readiness Center on Linder Way in Bremerton. These manipulative drills are challenging for a person of average physical condition. Live fire training is also done at the Training Tower located at the Readiness Center. During this intense two-day event recruits train on search & rescue techniques before advancing to the live fire training. Copies of the Recruit Academy schedule are posted in each fire station and extra copies are available from the Training Division at Station 71.

To be eligible, a volunteer candidate must complete a general knowledge written test. After passing the written test the candidate advances to a Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) where he or she must demonstrate the ability to complete an eight station course simulating common fireground tasks. All firefighters in Kitsap, Jefferson, Clallam, and Mason Counties regardless whether they are volunteers or career are required to take the same physical test. A video tape of the course is available for viewing before the test. Both the written and physical ability tests must be successfully completed before a candidate is permitted to enter the Recruit Academy. A physical examination by a doctor and a hearing evaluation by an audiologist are also required prior to training.

All recruits attend an EMS (Emergency Medical Services) module as the final component of the academy. This module provides First Aid, CPR, and Communicable Disease Control training as required by the State of Washington. This training enables recruits to protect themselves from blood-borne and airborne pathogens while assisting with sick or injured patients on medical alarms. Hepatitis, influenza, and other vaccines may be required to help protect responders from common forms of various communicable diseases.
