Poulsbo Fire Department held a promotional ceremony last Friday to celebrate the advancement of three firefighters.
Battalion Chief (BC) Rahl grew up in Kitsap and Mason Counties and graduated from Mason County High School. He began in the Fire Service as a volunteer in 1989 with North Mason Regional Fire Authority. He spent three years as a Resident Firefighter/EMT at South Kitsap Fire and Rescue. Rahl graduated from the Washington State Fire Academy in 1995 and was hired at Navy Region NW in 1996. Rahl was hired at Poulsbo in 2001. During that time, he earned an Associates Degree in Fire Command Administration in 2005 from Olympic College, was promoted to Lieutenant in 2006, and to Captain in 2015. He recently completed a 2017 Bachelors Degree in Fire Service Administration from Eastern Oregon University.
BC Rahl has been married 19 years to Laurie. They live in Seabeck with sons Erik and Gavin. Rahl keeps busy with youth sports including basketball, football and coaching baseball. He has been an active volunteer and was past PTA treasurer and president at his children’s school.
Captain Becker grew up in the Chicago area where he began his career in the fire service. He graduated from paramedic school at the College of DuPage and worked for the Downers Grove Fire Department for 5 years before moving to the Pacific Northwest to take a position with the Poulsbo Fire Department. Becker has worked for the Poulsbo Fire Department for the past 21 years as a Firefighter/Paramedic. In 2015 Becker was promoted to Lieutenant/Paramedic. Becker has been active in the International Association of Firefighters, IAFF Local 2819 for 11 years, serving as Vice President and currently President.
Becker has been married to his wife, Julie, for 22 years and they have two sons, Lucas and Justin. In his spare time, he enjoys hiking, shooting, and watching his boys play year-round sports including cross country, wrestling, and basketball.
Lieutenant Vay grew up in Tacoma, completed the Bates Technical College two year running start program in high school, and graduated from Curtis High School in 2003. He went on to be a resident firefighter at North Mason Regional Fire Authority. He started as a volunteer firefighter at Poulsbo in 2006, and was hired as a fulltime career firefighter in December of 2007. For the last five years Vay has been a very active member of the IAFF 2819 Executive Board, representing the uniformed and non-uniformed employees. Lieutenant Vay recently completed an associates degree from Bates Technical College.
Vay has been married to his wife, Tosha, for seven years. They have two beautiful daughters, 7-year-old Addison, and 4-year-old Kayleigh. Vay and his family like to camp and spend time at the beach.
