Woman dies and three others transported due to overdoses

August 21, 2018

Poulsbo Fire and Poulsbo Police  were dispatched to a possible overdose in the 19600 block of Ash Crest Loop NE.

Upon arrival, a 23-year-old woman was found deceased and three others in life-threatening conditions. Firefighters transported a 24-year-old man, and two women, aged 22 and 23, to area hospitals.

According to the Kitsap Sun, the 23-year-old drug dealer was arrested Friday and denied giving the victims cocaine laced with any other drug. According to court documents, he said he used the same cocaine that night and was OK. The Sun reported that the man rented a room at the apartment but was in Bremerton "partying" that night. He arrived home at 3 or 4 am, and found the others sleeping. When he awoke the next morning, he found the deceased woman, attempted CPR, and called 911 at 11:38 AM.

According to the Sun, "A search by investigators found items in the man’s car that initially tested positive for fentanyl, a powerful opioid increasingly noted for causing fatal overdoses. Investigators located a plate which people used to snort cocaine from the trunk of the man’s car, where he moved it after discovering Maleski. Also in the car was more than three grams of cocaine, separated in three bags, and $3,800 in cash. Court documents say at the time of the overdoses the man was under investigation by WestNET detectives for selling cocaine. He has not been charged with a crime but was booked Friday into the Kitsap County Jail for investigation of cocaine dealing. In 2017, 25 people died in Kitsap County from opiate overdoses; 21 died in 2016 and 22 in 2015, according to the Coroner's Office."

Initially Poulsbo Fire asked residents to evacuate the building as a precaution for the potential of hazardous materials. The Kitsap County Health Department and drug specialty agencies took over the hazmat investigation. Poulsbo Police said they believe that the hazards are localized and there is no risk to the general public.
