Molotov Cocktails used in attempted arson fire

Poulsbo Police Department and investigators with the Kitsap County Fire Marshal’s Office are investigating an apparent arson at Kitsap Bank in Poulsbo.

Poulsbo Fire Department Duty Chief Chris Morrison confirmed that an initial investigation found that four Molotov-like incendiary devices had been used in an attempt to set fire to the bank.

Morrison said fire crews arrived at 8:05 a.m. Dec. 27, to find a small, smoldering fire on a rooftop overhang at the bank which they quickly extinguished. Shortly after arriving, Morrison said the responders found evidence of the Molotov cocktails and detected the odor of accelerant as well.

“It looked like there might have been a wick in one,” Morrison said, explaining crews found remnants of one of the devices beside a wall and another three on the building’s overhang.

“They’re looking at security footage right now,” Morrison said on Thursday, Dec. 27. “They had a suspicious vehicle around there yesterday afternoon and they’re trying to find out if that is related.”

Upon further investigation Poulsbo Police Chief Dan Schoonmaker said the individual identified as the driver of the suspicious vehicle does not appear to be the one responsible for throwing the Molotovs.

“We were able to identify the driver of that vehicle and they are not involved with the potential arson that occurred,” Schoonmaker said. “One does not have to do with the other, our officers located the vehicle, located the driver and spoke with him. We believe he has nothing to do with the attempted arson that occurred yesterday morning.”

Schoonmaker added that the investigation is ongoing.
